The structure of the College

In 1993 the college became independent of Sached and a Khanya College Johannesburg Trust was formed, with a Board of Trustees responsible for the overall policy direction of the organisation.Initially the Board consisted mainly of academics but this has changed over time to reflect the range of constituencies Khanya College deals with.Presently, the Board is made up of a combination of academics, tradeunionists, community-based organisations, representatives of other NGO's active in the same field as the college, and the social movements campaigning on various issues. The college is registered as a Trust and is governed by a Board of Trustees as its highest decision making structure. Internally the College is divided into a number of programmes, and here is a College Co-ordinator who co-ordinates the work of the College and the various programmes.

The College Co-ordinator works with the Executive Committee to manage the College on a day-to-day basis. The Executive Committee is made up of the heads of the Programmes. Within the College an All- College meeting, in which all staff attend, is the highest decision making body. The College strives to operate democratically and accountably with as little hierarchy as possible. The College is also committed to a gender sensitive environment, fair and progressive labour standards, and to a relatively flat wage structure.

Constituencies the College services

The College is committed to serving organisations and individuals from working class and poor communities. The College is politically non-sectarian in its relationships with the various organisations from the communities it serves.Over the many years of its work with mass organisations the College's main constituencies are the trade unions, community based organisations, student and youth organisations, churches and ecumenical organisations, cooperatives, non-governmental organisations and the emerging social movements.Whereas the College works mainly with organised constituencies, some of the programmes do provide space for participation by individual activists and development practitioners. Khanya College services constituencies and organisations all over South Africa, in Southern Africa as well as other parts of the world.

In particular, the programmes of the college all emphasis broadening our work to include facilitating links and solidarity among the social movements and mass organisations in the Southern Africa region. The new emphasis on the region is a response to the increasing political, social and economic integration of the region.
