Research Papers and ReportsPart of the work of the Khanya Working Class History Programme is to conduct research into the history of the working class and its organisations. This is critical because research can add new knowledge to our history as working people and the poor. It can also assist in deepening our understanding of events and struggles that were waged under apartheid and capitalism. While research is not the primary focus of the programme, there are compelling cases where the programme engages in it. For example, the cause of the Durban strikes of 1973 is one of the areas that the programme strongly feels has not been researched thoroughly. Other areas include the role of women in trade unions and community struggles, workers’ culture, working class organisations and democracy, low-key struggles of the 1960s, uprisings and strikes during the struggle against apartheid, and so on. This section publishes research that the programme views to be a contribution to the gaps that we have identified. Activists and academics who have conducted research that falls within our identified areas of work are also encouraged to contact the programme about the publication of such work on the history website. |
